On a Port-au-Prince street, a curly-haired boy in a school uniform holds pink roses and a golden-wrapped chocolate box, standing by a parked white Honda Civic. The driver, a woman in sunglasses, waits inside. The street is lined with brightly colored houses, evoking the city’s vibrant spirit. The image captures a moment of youthful innocence and anticipation.

The City’s Heartbeat

The Schoolyard Confrontation

I could feel my heart pounding with urgency as I navigated the familiar sidewalk of Ruelle Marcelin. “I have to hurry,” I thought, quickening my pace. “His mom’s dropping him off any minute now. I can’t let him enter those gates. I’ll tackle him if I have to.” The determination to alter that pivotal moment propelled me forward.

As I approached the gates of Sainte Therese De L’Enfant Jesus, the school where many chapters of my life had unfolded, a surge of memories blurred the lines of time.

There, just as it had always been, stood Lucie’s green candy stall, a beacon of continuity in the ever-evolving landscape of life. Time seemed to have left this corner untouched, preserving it like a scene from a bygone era. Lucie, ensconced beneath her expansive straw hat, was an emblem of enduring presence, her features weathered yet timeless, as if she had transcended the years themselves.
