Shattered Spokes, Broken Dreams
The cool North Carolina night air carried the acrid scent of burnt rubber and despair. Luisa Perez’s feet pounded the asphalt of Nine Mile Road, each step a desperate prayer. The wail of sirens crescendoed, drowning out her labored breaths and the whimpers of the infant cradled against her chest. Red and blue lights sliced through the darkness, casting grotesque shadows across the rural Carteret County landscape.
Luisa skidded to a halt at the yellow police tape, her eyes wild, searching. The scene before her was a living nightmare — floodlights harsh and unforgiving, illuminating a tableau of shattered glass and twisted metal. Her gaze locked onto a yellow tarp in the road’s center, its edges fluttering in the night breeze. Nearby, a lone bicycle wheel, its spokes glinting in the harsh light, lay on the pavement. Her heart seized.
